Holiday at Home Parade

Cystic Fibrosis Bike Ride
16 October 2010

Public service events are an integral part of Ham emergency preparedness.  Participating in events provides the following benefits:

  1. An opportunity to test out new equipment and operating techniques.
  2. Experience in operating under formal nets.
  3. A chance to meet and interact with fellow hams.
  4. Allows other organizations and public officials to see first hand what amateur radio and ARES can offer, as well as a chance to practice working with some of the same folks we'd be supporting in an emergency.
  5. Exposure of Amateur radio to the general public.
  6. Oh, and let's not forget; FUN!

There are dozens of public service opportunities in District 3 during the course of a year.  Their needs range from a few hams providing demonstrations to school kids to almost a hundred over the course of several days.  Hopefully you will be able  find a few each year that you will be able to support.

This page is not intended to be a comprehensive listing of all public service events in the area.  Keep an ear out at club meetings or on your local repeaters.  Nor should you take the information on this page as the last word on times, places, etc.  The information posted here is what was provided by the event coordinator. Always check with the point of contact in each listing prior to showing up for an event.

If you have information on an upcoming event, please E-mail it to us.

UPDATED INFORMATION
1.             Where do I go?  What time do I have to be there?

*                   We will have a meeting sometime after 9 Sep 10 to train
and provide you with operational planning, maps, times needed to be in place and routes to get onto and off the base. And to give you your packages.

2.             What do I have to do?

*                   Our main job is to provide Logistical i.e. Status of
supplies, runner info, etc. information from the Hydration Station Captain
to Race officials.  We also will provide Emergency Communications in the
event of any type of emergency either Disasters or runner Safety information

3.             How long does it last?  Is there food or do I need to bring
my own?  Can I use a chair?  Can I park at my assignment or have to 'hike'
in?   Can I use HT or do I need higher power mobile?

*                   The starts at 7:30 AM and I'll need you in place before
they close the courses at 6:30 AM (subject to change).  Depending on
location, you could be there most of the day (about 2:00 PM ish) and need to plan accordingly.

*                   Bring food, water, foul weather gear, sunscreen,
umbrella, chairs. You will not have 110 VAC power.   Additionally, most
Hydration stations volunteers gladly share their food and beverages and have a great time.  They normally have a party atmosphere.  And you are
invited!!!

*                   You should be very close to your vehicle so no hiking
should be required and you should be able operate from your vehicle.

*                   HTs can be used on the course since UVARC's repeater
covers the entire course.  But have a back up HT and or mobile if possible.
We will provide more detail frequency operations in the ops plan at a later
date.

 4.             Can I come later as a relief operator?

*       Getting onto the base after the race starts is impossible.  They
shut the roads and gates down that are on the course.  You would require
special pass to get on and these are extremely limited.  Getting off after
your hydration station is passed by tail end Charlie is very easy.  There
will be three gates for volunteers to enter and exit.  More on this at the
meeting.

Cystic Fibrosis Bike Ride
16 October 2010
Where:
Caesar Creek State Park
When:
 Saturday 16 October
How long:
 6 Hours
What is it:
Charity Ride to support Cystic Fibrosis
The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation-Dayton Office is holding a bike ride fundraiser on Saturday October 16, 2010 starting and finishing at Caesar Creek State Park's public beach off of SR 73 near Harveysburg, OH. The event will have a 21 mile, a 32 mile, and a 65 mile bike course. Details are still unfolding so I have no specific assignments yet, but thus far there will be a need for fixed position ops at intersections, a few bike mobile ops to help cover the portion that utilizes the Little Miami Bike Trail, and mobile operators for roving positions on the course. Frequencies are not set yet either as I just got the details of this event today. We have 4 water / rest areas to cover and numerous other positions. I will be working up the communications plan over the next couple days and at that time I will have a better idea how many operators we will need for minimum staffing, but of course
with an event like this extra help will be put to use.

With the ease of congestion in the beach area my plan is to provide maps, course descriptions, and assignments via email ahead of the event so that operators can go direct to their assignment and not get stuck in the traffic jam in the start
/ finish area. The ride starts at 8:30 AM and the course will close at 2:30 PM. As of yet there is no answer if the 2:30 closure will be a firm time to pull people off the road, or just how it will work.

Pleas feel free to include this plea for help in club newsletters and pass it on to any email lists or other operators you may have contact with. I will pass on additional detail as they become available.
